What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Reaching out for mental health care — for yourself or your child — is a real step, and it’s normal to feel some uncertainty about what actually happens once you walk through the door. Here’s what to expect at Complete Care Family Psychiatry, so there are no surprises.

Before Your Visit

When you call or fill out our contact form, we’ll ask a few questions to understand what you’re looking for and match you with the right provider — either Dr. Annie Gadiparthi or Khristina Crawford, PMHNP. You’ll receive intake paperwork ahead of time covering your (or your child’s) history, current concerns, and goals for treatment.

Your First Session: 90 Minutes, Not 15

Unlike many psychiatric practices where an initial visit is rushed into a 30-minute slot, our first appointments run a full 90 minutes. That time goes toward:

  • A thorough conversation about your history, symptoms, and what’s brought you in
  • Understanding the full context — family dynamics, school or work, sleep, physical health
  • For children, input from parents about behavior at home and school
  • Beginning to identify what approach (therapy, medication, or both) makes sense

We’re not working from a rigid checklist. This is a real conversation, because two people with the same diagnosis can need very different care.

What Happens After

By the end of your first visit, you’ll leave with:

  • A working understanding of what’s going on
  • An initial care plan — which might include therapy, medication, both, or referrals for additional testing
  • A clear sense of what the next steps and follow-up schedule look like

Medication, if recommended, is never a “set it and forget it” decision — we monitor closely and adjust as needed, especially in the first few months.

A Note for Parents

If you’re bringing in a child or teen, know that we make space for both your perspective and theirs. Older children and teens often get some one-on-one time as well, so they feel heard rather than talked about.

Payment and Insurance

Complete Care Family Psychiatry is a cash-pay practice. We provide an itemized receipt (superbill) after each visit that you can submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement, depending on your plan.
